Prof Bartha Maria Knoppers –Distinguished James McGill Professor Emerita, Canada Research Chair in Law and Medicine (2001-24) is the Founding Director of the Centre of Genomics and Policy of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University (2009-24).
Professor Knoppers is internationally recognized for her outstanding contributions to the legal and ethical aspects of genetics, genomics and emerging biotechnologies as well as the health rights of children. She is a Co-Founder and member of the Board of Directors of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) and Co-Chair of the Ethics Working Group for the Human Cell Atlas (HCA) (2018-24). She is both an Officer of the Order of Canada and of the National Order of Quebec. She holds 5 doctorates honoris causa was awarded the Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research (2019), the Till and McCulloch Award for international policy (2020), and the Canadian Bioethics Society Lifetime Achievement award (2021) in recognition of her significant contributions to biomedical research ethics and healthcare.
